What Is the point of Summer Camp?

Now that we’re halfway through the summer, I’ve been thinking about what I’ve seen at Camp Kee-Mo-Kee and why this place means so much to so many.

Yes, summer camp is fun. But more than that, camp is about growing, connecting, and becoming who you want to be, your favourite you that you can be!

This summer, I’ve watched campers and staff step into their favourite selves. By trying new things, laughing loudly, and learning how to handle challenges.

I’ve seen campers get frustrated with a cabin mate, then work through it with help and care of a counsellor, learning empathy along the way. I’ve seen campers cheer each other on during games of 9-square in the air, learning teamwork and cooperation while they play. I’ve heard campers singing together as they sweep the dining hall, turning community duties into joyful moments. I’ve watched campers proudly rescue frogs from the pool as part of the self-declared “Official Frog Rescuers,” and then happily return to swimming.

These moments may look small, but they are full of learning the important lessons and values for life: teamwork, leadership, empathy, creativity, and kindness.

At Kee-Mo-Kee, campers are free to be their full and joyful selves. In that freedom, they grow. They take risks, express emotions, and discover a deep sense of belonging.

So what’s the point of summer camp? It’s what I see every day: growth, challenge, learning, belonging, and joy. Fun is the bonus and becoming is the gift. I’m truly excited for all the little moments of the second half of this summer!
