As we pass the midpoint of fall, the trees at camp have gone through their stunning transformation from green to gold, amber, and crimson. At first, the change was subtle, almost imperceptible and then, almost all at once, the huge oaks burst into colour. It’s a vivid reminder that when we embrace change it can be both powerful and beautiful. The trees at camp also demonstrate the art of letting go. By releasing their leaves to the wind, they are making space for what comes next: rest, renewal, and the promise of new growth in the season ahead. This reflects the off season of a summer camp. In preparing for next year we are letting go of what no longer serves us to create space for more joy, creativity, and growth in the season ahead. This isn’t about loss; it’s about possibility and moving forward. Some days at camp, change feels gentle, like a soft breeze nudging us toward something new. Other days, it’s more like a gust of wind, shaking loose whatever is ready to fall away. As Taylor Swift wisely reminds us, sometimes we just have to shake it off. Letting go gives us room to breathe and to discover what truly matters. “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.” Whether you know it from Ecclesiastes, The Byrds, or Pete Seeger, the line still rings true. Every season of camp has its own rhythm. Like the trees, we can trust the timing and purpose of our own seasons. By letting go of what no longer serves us, we stand taller, rooted in purpose, and ready to embrace the opportunities ahead. This fall, let’s follow the trees’ example: let go with grace, move with intention, and welcome the next season with open hearts. Change can be splendid when we choose to see it that way.
