In Free to Learn, developmental psychologist Peter Gray argues that kids learn best when they’re free to explore, play, and follow their curiosity. Drawing on anthropology and evolutionary psychology, he shows that for most of human history, children learned not through structured lessons but through unstructured play, peer interaction, and self-directed discovery. At Camp Kee-Mo-Kee, this philosophy comes to life every day! Camp isn’t just fun, it’s a powerful environment for learning and growing. Through Camper Choice Programming, our campers pick the activities that excite them most: CREATE, SPARK, MOVE, GET WET, CHALLENGE, or GO WILD. They get to mix with campers from other cabins, form new friendships, and deepen existing ones. This freedom to choose builds confidence, independence, and joy. New this summer is OKGO! A creative, camper and staff driven activity block that celebrates improvisation and spontaneity. Campers have the space to pitch ideas, share talents, lead unique group activities, or follow along with the improvised activity from staff. Want to organize a nature parade? Write a skit on the spot? Start a game no one’s played before? OK… GO! This format empowers campers to lead, imagine, and make camp their own. Our young adult staff and counsellors are the heart of this experience. They serve not just as supervisors but as mentors, playmates, and role models. They listen to campers, build on their interests, and encourage kids to try new things. At Kee-Mo-Kee, we believe we all learn best through play, curiosity, and connection. One of the most important ways we support this learning environment is by being a phone-free camp. In today’s screen-saturated world, Kee-Mo-Kee offers a rare opportunity for kids to unplug and fully engage with the people and nature around them. Campers are not permitted to bring cell phones or tech devices. Staff may only use phones during breaks, in designated areas, and only under specific conditions. This helps everyone stay present, connected, and focused on the camp experience. If you don’t hear from us during the week, it’s because we’re too busy supporting your camper with all the fun they are having! Camp Kee-Mo-Kee is a place where kids can truly be themselves! A place where learning is playful, creativity is encouraged, and people are present. Like Gray, we believe the best kind of learning is joyful, self-directed, and rooted in community.
