At Camp Kee-Mo-Kee, we believe nature isn’t just a backdrop—it’s one of our greatest teachers. Some of its most powerful lessons come from the trees. In The Anxious Generation, author Jonathan Haidt recounts the story of Biosphere 2, an ambitious ecological experiment in Arizona. Scientists created a fully enclosed ecosystem, complete with sunlight, water, and trees. But there was a surprising issue: the trees kept falling over before reaching maturity. Why? There was no wind. In nature, wind causes trees to bend, which pulls at their roots, and compress their trunks, creating ‘stress-wood’. This natural stress is essential for growth, encouraging stronger roots and denser wood. Without wind, the trees in Biosphere 2 grew quickly—but weakly. They couldn’t support their own weight. Haidt uses this story as a metaphor for raising children. Like trees, kids need challenges to grow strong and resilient. If we shield them from every gust—every scraped knee, every frustration—we may unintentionally leave them unprepared. True strength doesn’t come from avoiding discomfort, but from learning to navigate it. That’s the magic of camp. At Kee-Mo-Kee, we provide a safe, nurturing space for kids to experience their own “wind.” Whether it’s trying something new, working through challenges with peers, or spending time away from home, campers build confidence, courage, and resilience. We’re not throwing kids into hurricanes—we’re giving them space to sway, adapt, and grow. Our goal isn’t to remove every struggle, but to help campers process their experiences in healthy, meaningful ways. In a world increasingly dominated by screens and digital distractions, these real-life experiences matter more than ever. Haidt argues that too much time online, isolated from physical activity and face-to-face interaction, deprives kids of the essential “weather” they need to thrive. At camp, we trade notifications for nature—and clicks for connection. So this summer, as you send your camper to Kee-Mo-Kee, know that you’re giving them more than just memories. You’re giving them the opportunity to stretch their roots, strengthen their core, and prepare for life’s real storms. Let’s raise a generation of strong trees—deeply rooted, weather-tested, and ready for anything. Carter Mahoney
